Photograph Frames &
Accessories
Photograph frames are containers or holders for pictures, like a
painting or a photograph, used with the intent to enhance it, make it easier to display or protect
it.
Photograph frames have originally and traditionally been made of
wood, which is considered to still be the most common and most prestigious material. Although throughout the
years, photograph frames have used other materials including aluminum, plastic or polystyrene, and even sea
shells. Photograph frames also come in various colors and textures but gilding is commonly found especially
on older frames.
Elaborate moldings can also be found in some types of photograph
frames which may relate to the subject matter. You’ll find that complicated older frames are often made of
molded and gilded plaster over a plain wood base.
The photograph frame may contain glass pane or plastic glass substitute such as Plexiglas
to rotect the picture. In some instances, where the art in the frame is dispensable or durable, no
protection may be necessary. Glass is a commonly used protection for the picture such as those made with
water colors and very valuable oil paintings that can be found displayed in museums. The glass protection may
be treated with coatings and the most common one is UV filters.
There are also certain kinds of pieces that do not usually need glass when framed including
paintings done in acrylic or oil proof, stained glass or tiles and laminated posters. Although these kinds of
pieces are still sometimes put under glass such as if they were framed using mats or they are kept in a
carefully climate-controlled environment.
